Dad accused of killing daughter while cleaning gun

MARYSVILLE, Wash. � A father arrested after his 6-year-old daughter was fatally shot in their Washington state home allegedly told authorities he had been drinking double shots of vodka while cleaning his guns.

Court papers say Richard Peters told detectives he had asked his daughter, Stormy, to bring him the .45-caliber handgun Sunday. He said he must have pulled the trigger, and the girl fell to the floor. She was pronounced dead Monday.

Bail for Peters, 42, was set Monday at $250,000. He has been arrested for investigation of first-degree manslaughter.

His attorney, Annika Carlsten, requested that Peters be released from jail, The Herald newspaper of Everett reported. She argued that Peters isn't a flight risk, or a danger to himself or the community.

"It's obviously a tragedy for all involved and my primary concern is for my client and his family," Carlsten told The Associated Press on Tuesday night, declining to discuss any specifics.

The Snohomish County sheriff's office said two other children were removed from the home by Child Protective Services.

Yeah, I usually clean my rifles when I'm three sheets into the wind. The hard part is cleaning the barrel with a round in the chamber... RIP to the daughter.

I doubt he meant to shoot his daughter. Its a tragedy - alcohol impairs your judgement, guns are used to kill.

If you had to choose - a) prohibition, b) guns oulawed, c) X kids a year dead - what would you choose?

I agree . I believe everyone has the right to own any firearm they want ,as long as they are not total morons. Maybe instead of more gun laws our government should just institute some kind of IQ test.

I hate it when the media ramps up on the evil gun killing people. J6P is going to blame the gun and not the dumbass getting drunk while handling a gun. What he did isn't much different than drinking and driving.

On a side note, I could NEVER understand how any gun anywhere in the world can go off while "being cleaned." That has to be the default statement for murder. Sir, did you kill your wife? No, I was cleaning my gun and it shot her. I've cleaned guns countless times and

1. There was never a bullet within a 10 foot radius
2. The gun was usually field stripped so there would be no way for a bullet to get fired

I have never understood this.

I wouldn't worry about idiots like that giving gun owners a bad name. There are millions of gun owners. Of course there are going to be extreme cases of irresponsibility.

What we should worry about is media scrutiny. They have the power and the agenda to take the worst examples of any of our liberties they oppose and make them look almost typical.

They routinely throw reason to the wind and give the stupidest ideas the greatest consideration.They can and do make the exception to the rule look like the rule and make the rule look like the exception.

Mass media has the power of suggestion, the power of scrutiny, the power of censorship, the power of repetition and the power of smear. No amount of gun safety education or "IQ tests" is going to slow their agenda.

Mass media will NEVER tell the public exactly WHO is behind gun control or why.

Those cops are a bunch of @$$holes.......... that is a SHINING EXAMPLE of what happens when you cooperate with cops on ANY LEVEL.

How was the kid even questioned by himself ?? Where was the mother??? How could she allow her son to be left alone with cops under any circumstances?

This whole event stinks to high heaven And Obama and Biden are thankful for it.
